Quoin Rock produces two blended wines under the Glenhurst label. Varietals are carefully blended to achieve complexity and balance. The majority of the fruit used for the Glenhurst Red Blend originates from our own vineyards and includes select parcels of fruit from outside growers..
2001 VINTAGE
A particularly warm vintage allowed us to leave the fruit to ripen to the limit of optimum
ripeness. Minimal rainfall during the ripening season did not pose a risk to the crop.
VITICULTURE
The fruit used for making Glenhurst Red Blend originates from select blocks of immaculately managed vineyards. Vineyards are spur pruned with vertical shoot positioning and yields are strictly managed to enable the vine to optimally ripen the crop.
WINEMAKING
The Glenhurst 2001 is a blend of 41% Syrah, 31% Merlot and 28% Pinotage. Fermentation of hand sorted fruit was followed by a post fermentation maceration for 2 weeks. Malolactic fermentation in barrel was followed by an 18 month maturation in a combination of American and French oak barrels ( 50% new ). A light egg white fining and minimal filtration was done before bottling.
THE WINE
Hints of chocolate, spice and red fruit can be found on the nose. The palate has good fruit concentration and a lingering aftertaste.
FOOD PAIRING
Ideally served at sixteen ° Celsius, this blend will complement full flavoured dishes.
AGEING POTENTIAL
The Glenhurst 2001 is drinking well on release and will gain in complexity with ageing for a further 8 years from vintage.
