Glenhurst Red Blend 2002

Quoin Rock produces two blended wines under the Glenhurst label. Varietals are carefully blended to achieve complexity and balance. The majority of the fruit used for the Glenhurst Red Blend originates from our own vineyards and also includes select parcels of fruit from outside growers..

2002 VINTAGE

Rainfall and high humidity during the ripening season posed a potential risk to the crop. Due to naturally open canopies and good air movement fruit remained healthy until harvest. The increased soil moisture enabled the vines to ripen their crop without the usual stress and produced balanced wines with a beautiful elegance.

VITICULTURE

The fruit used for making Glenhurst originates from select blocks of immaculately managed vineyards. Vineyards are spur pruned with vertical shoot positioning and yields are strictly managed to enable the vine to optimally ripen the crop.

WINEMAKING

The Glenhurst 2002 is a blend of 49% Syrah, 40% Merlot and 11% Pinotage. Fermentation of hand sorted fruit was followed by a post fermentation maceration for 2 weeks. Malolactic fermentation in barrel was followed by a 14 month maturation in a combination of American and French oak barrels ( 50% new ). A light egg white fining and minimal filtration was done before bottling.

THE WINE

Hints of hickory, spice and red fruit can be found on the nose. The palate is elegantly balanced with a fine fruit structure and lingering after taste.

FOOD PAIRING

Ideally served at sixteen ° Celsius, this blend will complement full flavoured dishes.

AGEING POTENTIAL

The Glenhurst 2002 is drinking well on release and will gain in complexity with ageing for a further 8 years from vintage.
